Most candidates accept the first number they're offered. A few calm sentences can add lakhs to your package - and recruiters expect you to ask.
The four sentences
- Enthusiasm first: "I'm really excited about this role."
- Open the door: "Is there any flexibility on the base salary?"
- Anchor with data: "Based on market rates and my experience, I was hoping for X."
- Then stay silent and let them respond.
Two rules
- Negotiate the base first - it compounds every raise and bonus after.
- Get the final offer in writing before you resign anywhere.
